The Environmental Education Program in China is a one-of-kind, 4-week summer program for rising high-school seniors and juniors. It will be held in ChengDu, China on the Campus of Southwest Jiao-Tung University from July 12 to August 6, 2010.

This program combines Environmental Science with Community Service and Chinese Cultural Immersion. It is intended for serious students who want to understand what is the current technology (in China) of Environmental Technology and what it takes to reduce carbon emission. At the same time, students will be asked to devote part of their time to perform community service to various segments of Chinese population. Finally, students will participate in traditional Chinese cultural activities and in return showcase typical activities in America. We are looking for students who display leadership, independent thinking, and motivation to understand our Environment and the population within our Global Village.

The program is organized as follows. The first three days of the week, the students will engage in learning about environmental technology in China. They will be studying different methods of reducing carbon emission as well as ways to reduce pollution and waste. Students will be asked to perform basic measurements and provide a daily summary of their findings, including additional research under guidance of university professors to be supplemented by other information from library and the Internet.

One day a week (typically Thursday), the students will perform community service, such as entertain children at a orphanage, help out chores at a senior citizen center, etc. They will organize as a group to provide diversion as well as render help as necessary.

On Fridays, the students will be immersed in Chinese Culture (caligraphy, Martial Arts, etc.) or spend half a day on additional research of environmental education. This will be a fairly flexible day where depending on the interest of the group, activities (other than free time) can be organized.

On weekends, there will be excursions to historical and tourist attractions near ChengDu, including Emei Mountain and Panda reserve.

This program is limited to the first 25 eligible students going into their Junior or Senior Year in high School. We require a good GPA and face-to-face or phone interview.

Note that this program is a non-profit initiative sponsored by CampDepot.com, organized by Dr. Chris Huang, MIT Educational Counselor. The fee is $1600, which covers the tuition, transportation, and room and board of students in China. However it does NOT include airfare to ChengDu and any other optional excursions after the program.
